Decided to try a different Indian restaurant, so I called and ordered a dish from this one The 1st thing I noticed when I went to pick it up, is the dirty doors (glass and handle), got in, tables were nasty and sticky, a guy sitting eating with his hands and dropping rice all over himself and the table, I was thinking to just leave without the food. Got the order and honestly, it was horrible. I’ve been a customer of Curry Bowl for years and their food is much better than anywhere else. I will never go back to this restaurant because of hygiene and food quality. Stay clear unless if you don’t mind dirtiness.
We ordered special biryani, gongura chicken, and curry leaf chicken. Curry leaf chicken was excellent. Special biryani had just masala in it with chicken. About 80% was masala. The gongura chicken had no gongura, and we were searching for flavor. Nawab used to be good, not sure what happened. Hope they improve.
Probably one of the best boneless fried chicken biryani in town (if you haven’t already, try their special chicken biryani). They do have a seating area but I’d consider this place strictly a takeout place. They have weekend specials as well such as afghani chicken biryani. They also have some snacks and mango lassi for your sides. Apart from the biryanis, I didn’t really like anything else on the menu but the biryani is soo good it keeps bringing me back to this place for some late night take out biryani and Netflix during winter. Plenty of parking available and the grocery store next door is connected to this restaurant internally.
This is just another indian restaurant in Memphis area. They have a grocery store too, called ‘Apna Bazar’. We ordered over phone and picked the food from the restaurant. It was mostly packed when we were there. They have a limited numbers of tables. The food was not ready by the time we reached. So we were waiting. They sell some fresh snack. We were looking for samosa, which was finished by then. So, we bought egg puff. The owner/ staff gave us a free samosa ( the last one in the counter). Which was absolutely a nice gesture from them! We took the food and ate coming in home. My home is about 18 miles drive from there ( I live in the downtown area of Memphis). So the food was not that hot when we reached home.We got chicken dum biriyani, chicken fried rice and chili chicken. The fried rice and chili chicken was decent, more like a home made food. The biriyani was terrific. All the portion sizes were very good, as compared to the price we paid. We will go back definitely.
Update: try their chicken fry biriyani. It’s good, except the fact that it’s too spicy for me. Maybe you could request them to put less spice. The Apollo fish fry is also superb, if it would have been a little less spicy. One another r thing - they make the best samosa in Memphis, for sure.
I went there on Thursday evening for chicken lollipop and Vijayawada Chicken Biryani. Upon entering They said we have only Biryani available and I took the Vijayawada Chicken Biryani. The taste was good. Sitting area is compact and they have Grocery store as well over there.
This is literally the best Indian food in the Memphis area, and the service can’t be beat.
Edit, below is the original review: Nawabs has fallen so far, so fast. I ordered my usual, palak paneer and gongura biryani. Biryani was ordered american medium and palak paneer was ordered hindustani hot.
We waited quite a while for the order and when we got home, we noticed there was no rice for the paneer. We called and they said they no longer serve the complimentary rice. Palak paneer is a curry seeved with rice! My children ate the gongura while I had to make rice for my part of the meal. My children couldn't eat it as it was too spicy for them. Finished the rice and tried mine. I cried...not from spicy food, but from the laughable quality of the food. If they need someone to tutor them on how to make hindustani food, they can ask me, a dutch-indonesian. To put it plainly, a single granule of black pepper has more spice. Now onto the issue. The menu never made mention of their claims. Rice isn't even on the menu because it is served with almost all of the food. We were not informed or asked if we wanted rice. Then the server had the audacity to say what she did. We loved this place, but now will not return and unfortunately that will also affect apna bazaar.
Original:
Oh my goodness...just as a warning, do not order for just yourself! We ordered the special murgh biryani and palak paneer. Paneer was ordered mild for my children and the biryani was ordered medium in the event my more adventurous child wanted a taste. It was FABULOUS! I wish I got the full throttle spice, but even at medium, it was great! The service person offered complimentary tea...I guess he didn't know that I understand hindustani cuisine and out came Chai! My wife and I were in food heaven! If you want to satisfy a need of great spicy food or want something that is not American/americanized, then come and be blown away!
I had a Paneer masala, garlic naan which was good and came with the rice . It is a small place to dine in and have a store side by side. Overall the food is great and have a perfect mix of spices on sauce and the garlic naan is made fresh out of oven. Only things is the food is served in togo cups and foam plate and have to trash it before you leave.
